How Jose Mourinho's 'boring' Chelsea became EPL champions
They have their fifth Premier League title in their pocket without losing a single match at Stamford Bridge all season; they have the highest goal difference and have scored the second highest number of goals in the league after Manchester City; six of their players are part of the PFA Team of the Year and above all, they have got Jose Mourinho, whose witty one-liners always make headlines and yet they get labelled as 'boring'.
If we have to sum up Chelsea's performance in two words, it would be: well executed. Mourinho knew what his team is capable of, what are their strong points and where they lack when compared to other teams in England. At the start of the season, the Blues were playing attacking football that required having more possession of the ball and making more passes, but when Mourinho realised that his players were getting exhausted, he went back to his defensive style of play. The 'Mourinho defence' required all his players to know what to do when in possession of the ball or when the opposition is in the possession of the ball. Mourinho's tactical plan involved putting pressure on the opponent by using his disciplined defence and then counter-attacking with maximum number of players.
It won't be an overstatement to say that Mourinho made Chelsea the champions. Jose lives for titles and championships and never settles for anything less. His team is now at the top of the Premier League table for last 261 days and when the season ends on May 24, they will break Manchester United's 1993-94 record of staying top for 262 days.
The only thing that made this season dull was the the lack of challenge Chelsea got from their opponents. The fact that their EPL rivals have not been able to beat them for more than four months tells how ridiculous it is to call them boring and not worthy champions.
Chelsea were leading the EPL table since day one of the 2014-15 season. They were given a good fight by Manchester City and they came very close to leapfrogging the Blues for the top spot. But City couldn't maintain their form. Their underperforming midfielders and injury to Sergio Aguero further deteriorated their chances.
Chelsea, after a shocking 3-5 loss against Tottenham Hotspur on the first day of 2015, have regained their composure and haven't lost a game in the league since. Arsenal picked up their game in the later half of the season and became No. 2 but they never really challenged their north-London rivals. Chelsea's 1-0 home win against Crystal Palace on May 3rd helped them secure their first Premier League title in five years.
Mourinho, in his first season at Chelsea after leaving Real Madrid, realised that winning the title won't be possible unless they have a world class centre-forward. He signed Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid and to give the midfield more strength after Juan Mata left for Manchester United, Mourinho, in a major transfer coup, signed Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas.
These crucial transfers reaped benefit for the club - especially in the first half of the league when Costa was scoring in almost every match and Fabregas, in his role as a playmaker, was creating the best chances and gave the highest number of assists. His partnership with Nemanja Matic and Eden Hazard made Chelsea's midfield the best in the league.
Once Mourinho identified the core members of his team, he decided to go with them and didn't experiment too much with starting XIs.
A total of 13 Chelsea players have played in 20 or more matches so far in the league this season. The number of injuries have gone down from the last season and Costa was the only player who struggled with fitness after a hamstring injury. Eden Hazard, who has been the star performer for Chelsea this season, has scored 14 goal so far and provided eight assists. He was bestwoed upon the 2014-15 PFA Player of the Year award for his brilliance in the field.
Captain John Terry had one of his best season since he joined the club. He has also become highest goal-scoring defender in EPL history after he scored his 39th goal in the league in Chelsea's 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge.
One other factor that was crucial in the Blues winning the championship was their ability to grind out results in tough matches. They have made brilliant comebacks and have not lost two consecutive matches in
